Lekcja 23: Past Continuous. Tło w przeszłości i jego przerwanie
Słownictwo: leksyka narracyjna i scenograficzna
Jak pracować z tą lekcją
- Przeczytaj Część 1 — to o spojrzeniu: „w trakcie" vs „punktowe".
- Zapamiętaj powiązanie z Past Simple — Past Continuous sam używany jest rzadko; częściej żyje w parze z Past Simple.
- Przećwicz matrycę „tło + przerwanie" — firmowa konstrukcja native speakerów w opowieści.
- Zapamiętaj czasowniki-wyjątki — te, które nie lubią formy continuous (know, love, see…).
To najbardziej „fabularny" czas angielskiego — to nim opowiada się historie. Bez niego każda opowieść brzmi sucho i kropkowo.
Część 1: Co to jest Past Continuous
Past Continuous = „w momencie w przeszłości działanie BYŁO W TRAKCIE".
Kontrast z Past Simple:
| Past Simple (punkt) | Past Continuous (proces) |
|---|---|
| I read a book. — Przeczytałem / czytałem książkę (fakt). | I was reading a book. — Czytałem (byłem w trakcie czytania). |
| It rained yesterday. — Wczoraj padał deszcz / padało. | It was raining yesterday at 5 p.m. — Wczoraj o 17 padał deszcz. |
| She lived in Paris. — Mieszkała w Paryżu (fakt życia). | She was living in Paris that summer. — Tamtego lata mieszkała w Paryżu (czasowo). |
Główna różnica: Past Simple daje fakt lub zakończone działanie. Past Continuous „zatrzymał czas" i pokazał, że w tym momencie działanie trwało.
Część 2: Forma — was/were + verb-ing
was / were + verb-ing
| Osoba | was/were | + verb-ing |
|---|---|---|
| I | was | reading |
| you | were | reading |
| he / she / it | was | reading |
| we | were | reading |
| they | were | reading |
Ta sama logika co Present Continuous (L11), tylko was/were zamiast am/is/are.
Przeczenie: wasn't / weren't. I wasn't sleeping. — Nie spałem. They weren't listening. — Oni nie słuchali.
Pytanie: was/were wychodzi na przód. Were you working? — Pracowałeś? What was she doing? — Co ona robiła?
Pisownia verb-ing — taka sama jak w Present Continuous:
- e na końcu wypada: make → making, write → writing
- krótka samogłoska + spółgłoska → podwaja się: run → running, sit → sitting, swim → swimming
- -ie → -ying: lie → lying, die → dying
Część 3: Trzy typowe użycia
Typ A: Tło w przeszłości + punktowe wydarzenie (Past Continuous + Past Simple)
Najczęstsze użycie. Długie działanie trwało — krótkie je przerwało.
when + Past Simple (krótkie działanie) while / as + Past Continuous (tło)
I was sleeping when the phone rang. — Spałem, kiedy zadzwonił telefon. While she was cooking dinner, the doorbell rang. — Kiedy gotowała kolację, zadzwonił dzwonek do drzwi. As we were walking home, it started to rain. — Kiedy szliśmy do domu, zaczął padać deszcz.
Hack dla osoby polskojęzycznej:
- Długie tło, w trakcie → Past Continuous („was/were + ing")
- Krótkie wydarzenie, punkt → Past Simple
- when zwykle stawia się przed Past Simple, while/as — przed Past Continuous.
Typ B: Scena w przeszłości — „w tym momencie"
Opis sytuacji w konkretnym momencie przeszłości.
It was 8 p.m. The sun was setting. Children were playing in the park. A cold wind was blowing from the sea. — Była 20:00. Słońce zachodziło. Dzieci bawiły się w parku. Zimny wiatr wiał od morza.
To scenograficzna „kamera filmowa" — typowy chwyt na początku opowieści.
Typ C: Dwa równoległe trwające działania
Oba działania trwały jednocześnie (bez przerywania).
While I was cooking, my husband was watching TV. — Kiedy gotowałam, mąż oglądał telewizję. The kids were sleeping while we were talking quietly. — Dzieci spały, kiedy cicho rozmawialiśmy.
Oba czasowniki w Past Continuous. while — typowy łącznik.
Część 4: when vs while vs as
Te trzy spójniki często się myli.
| Spójnik | Sens | Co po nim |
|---|---|---|
| when | w momencie, gdy | zwykle Past Simple |
| while | podczas (jednocześnie z) | zwykle Past Continuous |
| as | w czasie gdy / w miarę jak | Past Continuous |
Przykłady:
I was reading when he came in. — Czytałem, gdy wszedł. While I was reading, he was watching TV. — Podczas gdy czytałem, on oglądał telewizję. As I was leaving, the rain started. — Kiedy wychodziłem, zaczął padać deszcz.
Elastyczność: kiedy oba działania są punktowe, oba idą w Past Simple, i wtedy when oznacza „i wtedy": When the phone rang, I answered it. — Kiedy telefon zadzwonił, odebrałem. (Dwa wydarzenia jedno za drugim — oba Past Simple.)
Część 5: Czasowniki, które NIE używają się w continuous
Cała grupa angielskich czasowników „nie lubi" formy -ing. To stative verbs — czasowniki stanów, percepcji i myślenia. Z nimi używamy Past Simple, nawet jeśli w sensie działanie „trwało".
| Grupa | Czasowniki | Przykład |
|---|---|---|
| wiedza / myśl | know, believe, understand, mean, remember, forget, think (= sądzić) | I knew her well. (NIE I was knowing) |
| percepcja | see, hear, smell, taste, feel (bez działania) | I saw a bird. (NIE I was seeing) |
| emocje / sympatie | like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, hope | She loved him. (NIE She was loving him) |
| posiadanie | have (= mieć), own, belong | I had a car. |
| bycie | be (często), seem, look (= wyglądać) | He seemed tired. |
Hack na zamieszanie: think i have — oba bywają i stative, i dynamic:
- I think you're right. (= sądzę — stative)
- I was thinking about you. (= rozmyślałem — dynamic, można continuous)
- I have a car. (= posiadam — stative)
- I was having a shower. (= brałem prysznic — dynamic)
